LongStay China Reference, not advice

How to legally stay in China 6–9 months a year

There are three legal routes, and they stack. Citizens of the roughly 50 visa-free countries can enter for 30 days at a time with unlimited entries, and reset that clock by leaving to Hong Kong or Macao. A 60-day L visa gives longer single stays and can be extended once by 30 days from inside China. A residence permit — including one you can qualify for through a six-month medical treatment record — gives you a full year without leaving at all. Combined, these cover six to nine months a year in the country, legally, without ever needing to relocate permanently.

No Chinese employer, spouse or relative required. This page covers every route, the exact limits, and the mistakes that get people refused at the border.

The three routes, and what each one actually gives you

Most confusion comes from mixing these up. They are separate policies with separate rules.

The rules that decide whether you get through the border

These are the details people find out at the wrong moment.

Every Chinese visa carries three separate fields, and the visa dies when either of two of them runs out. Enter Before is the last date you may enter the country. Entries is how many times you may cross the border — 1, 2, or M for unlimited. Duration of Each Stay is how long you may remain after each entry. Reading only the expiry date on the visa is the single most common and most expensive mistake.

Visa-free entry cannot be extended from inside China, and it cannot be converted into a residence permit or a study visa without leaving first. If you entered visa-free and your 30 days are running out with no trip abroad planned, your only legal options are to leave the country or to overstay, which carries a daily fine and a record.

What you can and cannot do from inside China

The Hong Kong and Macao reset, done properly

Leaving mainland China for Hong Kong or Macao ends your current stay, and re-entering starts a fresh 30 days. It is legal, it is free if you are not visa-national for either territory, and it is the most widely used route by long-stay visitors.

The failure mode is not the crossing — it is the pattern. Same-day turnarounds repeated three or four times in a row read to border officers as de facto settlement rather than tourism, and entry can be refused. Spend a night across the border and keep the receipt. That one habit turns a suspicious record into an ordinary series of short trips.

Do not confuse this with transit visa-free

The 240-hour transit visa-free scheme is a different policy that requires onward travel to a third country. It cannot be used to reset a stay by hopping to Hong Kong and back, and it is not a route to long-term residence.

The tax line at 183 days

Days matter, not visa type. Staying more than 183 days in a calendar year generally makes you a Chinese tax resident. Six to nine months sits right on that boundary, so plan the calendar deliberately rather than by accident.

Where the money actually gets saved

Rent is cheaper. Medical care is dramatically cheaper. That gap is the real reason this works.

Indicative private-clinic prices, USD. Ranges reflect city and clinic tier.
Procedure China United States
Single dental implant 800 – 1,500 3,000 – 6,000
All-on-4 full arch 6,000 – 18,000 25,000 – 50,000
Porcelain veneer, per tooth 150 – 300 900 – 2,500

Dentistry, ophthalmology and traditional Chinese medicine are the three services international patients use most. Major hospitals in the largest cities increasingly run dedicated international departments and accept direct billing from a number of international insurers.

Medical treatment is also a route to a residence permit

This one is widely overlooked. A foreign national receiving medical treatment or assistance in China can apply for a one-year residence permit on the strength of a hospital or medical-service record covering six months or more. For someone with an ongoing treatment need, that converts a stay built on border runs into a stay with a fixed address and no exit requirement. It is the closest thing the system offers to a long-stay status without employment or family ties.

One scheme worth knowing about

Hainan province runs its own visa-free scheme covering 59 countries — including the United States, which is not on the main visa-free list. Medical treatment is an accepted purpose of entry. It is restricted to Hainan, and you must arrive through one of eight designated ports. Hainan also hosts the Boao Lecheng pilot zone, the only place in the country where drugs and devices approved abroad but not yet approved in China can be used. It has drawn hundreds of thousands of patients and a fast-growing number of international medical travellers.

What a month costs

Monthly budget outside the most expensive cities, at roughly 6.7 yuan to the US dollar.
ItemAmount
One-bedroom apartment~$400
Simple meal out~$3
Total, single person~$950 / month
Total, couple~$1,600 / month

Which city you pick changes the answer more than which country you are from. The practical ranking factor for long-stay visitors is how cheap and how quick the border run is — cities a short hop from Hong Kong or Macao, or on a direct rail link out of the country, beat cities that require a flight.

Questions people ask before they book

How long can a foreigner stay in China without a visa?

30 days per entry for citizens of the roughly 50 countries in China's unilateral visa-free scheme, with no cap on the number of entries and no cap on total days per year. Leaving to Hong Kong or Macao resets the clock. The scheme is legislated through 31 December 2026 and has been renewed annually — treat anything past that date as unconfirmed.

Can I extend a visa-free stay?

No. Visa-free entry cannot be extended inside China, and it cannot be converted into a study visa or residence permit from inside the country. An L visa can be extended by up to 30 days inside China. A medical-treatment residence permit is one of the few routes to a full year.

How many times can I do a Hong Kong or Macao run?

There is no fixed legal limit, but there is an enforcement pattern. Three or four same-day turnarounds in a row are what get people refused entry as de facto residents. Spend a night across the border and keep the receipt.

Does the 240-hour transit visa-free rule work the same way?

No. It is a separate policy requiring onward travel to a third country — not a return to where you came from — and it cannot be used to build a long stay.

How much does a month in China cost?

Roughly 950 US dollars a month for one person and 1,600 US dollars for a couple, outside the priciest cities, at about 6.7 yuan to the dollar. A one-bedroom apartment is around 400 dollars a month and a simple meal around 3.

Does this make me a Chinese tax resident?

Days decide it, not visa type. More than 183 days in a calendar year generally makes you a Chinese tax resident, and a 6 to 9 month stay can cross that line.

Can a foreigner buy property in China?

A foreign individual may own only one home in China, for their own use, and generally must have worked or studied in China for at least a year to qualify. Most long-stay visitors rent instead.

Is this the same as retiring in China?

No, and it is worth being precise about that. China has no retirement visa or retirement residence category. There is no route that says "retiree" on it. What exists is long-stay access through visa-free entry, visitor visas, and residence permits for study, work, family, private affairs or medical treatment. Everything on this page is built on those, and nothing here should be read as a retirement migration path.
